Here are a few thoughts on the subject:
1) For anyone who is curious, members of our church don't (or shouldn't) believe in the practice of polygamy today.
2) Polygamy was once accepted, and necessary by more than just Mormons.
3) Today, in my personal opinion, it is a horrible and evil practice that enslaves children to disgusting old men, and aids in the unnecessary over-population of the Earth. It has been distorted, and abused.
4) People who aren't LDS, and even those who are, don't seem to understand. Scriptures tell us some things, prophets tell us more things. If you believe in the Bible, you should believe in prophets. When our scriptures tell us that polygamy is acceptable, it's because it was at one point. Even in the Bible it was. When prophets give revelation that polygamy is not needed or acceptable - we should listen. You can't pick and choose what to believe in when the prophet says it plain as day.
5) If you are a member of the church and claim that polygamy is still necessary, and that you have to have MULTIPLE wives to go to the celestial kingdom - sorry - you are sorely mistaken and NOT a member of this church.
6) I am not interested in lists of scriptures that 1) Are from Mormons (or non-Mormons really) giving me reasons why polygamy is great and 2) Are from Non-Mormons giving me lectures on any of the above statements.
7) All other comments and insults welcome.

had to come into the hospital on an emergency and am just surfing. you are sooo refreshing...love your point of view and your openess and still not deserting your testamony
Thank you, that's what I really like to hear. Sorry about the emergency though!
My thoughts on #3.
I don't think it is an evil practice, but I do believe it is used by evil men for all the reasons you said. God never would have approved it if it was/is evil.
I think TODAY it is an evil practice, even if God once allowed it. The Prophets have stated that it is not needed, and the FLDS members who practice are not members of our church. What more can be said?

I disagree with a number of points in your post, but in respect to your request in #6 that's all I am going to say.
From what I've heard, while it is not something we practice today, it is a Celestial Principle. That doesn't mean everyone will necessarily practice it in the Celestial Kingdom, but I think some will. I think, like the Law of Consecration, it was taken because we couldn't deal with it. Originally, a man had to be commanded to take another wife. It began to turn into a greed thing and was taken. I don't think it is right now--the prophets have said as much, but that doesn't mean it won't be right again. And sorry, I don't have any sources, so correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've always thought.
Hinkley's comments are misleading to the rank and file. In order to be exhaulted, both men and women must practice polygamy in the after life. Hinkley needs to add a qualifier to be completely honest....(, on earth). Milk before meat...perhaps, but when salemen and/or lawyers use the same technigue, I get annoyed. I even consider it dishonest. That beeing said, the gospel is not a car, but if the LDS church is really interested in giving intelligent people a valid case for their beliefs, then I'm suggesting comments like His do more harm than good.

There's very little comment moderation at Normal Mormons as everyone has a voice that should be heard! (Just keep it clean why doncha?)
